For those of us in recovery, a long holiday weekend filled with parties can be a challenge. Instead of attending the big alcohol-infused bash or party boat on the lake, there are many other ways to enjoy your extra day off on Labor Day in Austin.

Throw your own BBQ or cookout with some tasty grilled food and icy, non-alcoholic drinks. LaCroix flavored sparkling water is all the rage and it’s both tasty and low cal. Or get an energy boost from an iced or cold-brew coffee.

Want to get out and enjoy a special event? Celebrate Austin’s growing film industry on the Texas State Capitol Grounds with Film Family Labor Day. This free event pays tribute to the entertainment crews and filmmakers of Texas with food, games and fun.

Head due north to Round Rock for some Gospel Music in the Park at Old Settlers. This free event includes hot dogs and soda plus a musical line-up of jazzy, traditional, and contemporary gospel acts. While you’re there, take a walk on the 3.3 mile trail. There are more than 646 acres to explore, including a water park.

Savor the last days of summer with a cool dip in the pool. Austin has many famous pools like Barton Springs, Deep Eddy and Hamilton’s Pool. Did you know that there are 29 free pools around town too? Many are family friendly.

Give yourself a break during Labor Day with the Free Day of Yoga citywide. We are big advocates of yoga in recovery and you can use this annual opportunity to experience a new style of yoga, visit a new studio or take a class from a new instructor. This is an easy way to try yoga for the first time and discover its many benefits.

Take your dog out for some fun and socializing. Austin has many great dog parks. Try a new one this weekend. A canine favorite is Red Bud Isle, jutting out of Lake Austin and just south of the Tom Miller Dam. It’s 17.5 acres of leash-free fun.

No matter what your plans are for Labor Day weekend, we’re here to support you with Sober LivingWe keep our calendar updated with all types of activities, including lots of fun events for the recovery community.
