Recovery In Austin: Kyle’s Story

There are few places I love more on this planet more than Austin, Texas. The culture, the vibe, and the personality of the city is electric. It’s hard not to relax when you’re strolling down South Congress Avenue or enjoying a cup of coffee at Bouldin Creek Cafe. While these local hot spots may make the city infectiously cool, there’s another reason why I love Austin: it’s the city where I got my life back. After being mercilessly beaten down by drugs and alcohol, my disease of addiction had taken me to a level of desperation I didn’t know existed. Austin, Texas is where I got my life back. As a fan of everything ATX has to offer, I wanted to share my experience with this amazing recovery community – Getting Sober in Austin: Kyle’s Story.

Originally, I’m from a suburb of Dallas, Texas – another great city in the state of Texas, but with far less resources for people with addiction than Central Texas. For over 10 years, I was decimated by drugs and alcohol. Heroin, crystal meth, and an array of pharmaceutical drugs had taken me hostage. I couldn’t function without being under the influence, and my productivity on the drugs was debatable at best. When I finally reached the end of my rope, I found a drug and alcohol rehab in Austin that welcomed me with open arms. That’s when my journey began.

The Austin recovery community is sort of paradoxical – while this city may be a party destination spot where thousands flock to 6th Street for nights they’ll never remember or attend University of Texas tailgates, it also offers one of the strongest recovery communities in the nation. I found upon leaving treatment that virtually every hour on the hour, at various locations across Travis County, there were meetings being held by people in every fellowship of recovery who told my story. They felt the same way I did. They understood my struggles and shared with me how they had succeeded. They knew the pain I had overcome, and had advice on how to persevere. At times, I felt like I was in the Truman Show – everything felt too good to be true. But it was.

I’ve found that there’s nowhere quite like Austin to get sober. As a man who finally attained recovery at an early age, I found a young and vibrant community of people. This wasn’t my grandparent’s sobriety story – there were hundreds of young adults who were happy, joyous, and free. They had found a way out and they shared their newfound life with me. I found that, contrary to my previous ideas, I could and did have fun in recovery. I found that I didn’t need drugs or alcohol to be comfortable. In fact, I finally felt like a human once the obsession to use was removed.

No matter what sober clubhouse I was frequenting, or what new fellowship I was trying out, the fact remained – getting sober in Austin saved my life and the people I found always welcomed me.
