More than 25 years ago, I walked into a therapist’s office to convince to her to “lock me up” because I had “turned my second husband into an alcoholic.” At that time, I had no idea about the extent of my own addiction, as I was so consumed with my husband and his drinking. At the age of 29, I was on my second marriage (which was failing), just had my third child, who was 18 months old, no education, no means to support myself or kids and no family support. I had a lifetime of abuse, I was broken, lost, scared and wanted to die.
I grew up in a physically and emotionally abusive home. I was a very anxious and fearful child who by the age of six had figured out that she could not rely on anyone except herself. I had no self-esteem and everyone terrified me. I lived in a constant state of guessing at what normal was.
At 14, I had my first drink of alcohol, and for the first time in my life I wasn’t afraid. It was the best feeling I ever had. The only time I could stand life was when I could drink with my friends.
My drinking increased along with experimenting with various drugs. This resulted in many blackouts, loss of friends and abusive boyfriends. I married an abusive alcoholic at 18 to get out of the house, had a baby at 19 and was divorced at 21. I met alcoholic husband number two at 23, married him and had two more kids.
That moment of desperation when I walked into that therapist’s office was all it took to create a ripple effect that has resulted in a healed heart, a recovered marriage and a sense of my authentic self. Recovery gave me a life and today I am humbled beyond measure that God chooses me to be an instrument of change to helps others heal and find their lives!
