ART for substance abuse and addiction

Accelerated Resolution Therapy – Austin TX

As part of our trauma-informed approach to treating substance abuse and addiction, Infinite Recovery offers accelerated resolution therapy (ART) in Austin, Texas. We provide this therapy to clients in both our inpatient and outpatient treatment programs. ART is a type ofimag psychotherapy that helps reduce symptoms of trauma by reprogramming the way painful memories are stored in the brain. [1]

When combined with our other therapeutic treatments and modalities, ART can help individuals with substance use disorders. It enables them to release some of the triggers that motivate them to drink or abuse drugs.

What Is Accelerated Resolution Trauma Therapy (ART)?

Get Help Today

Accelerated Resolution Therapy, also called ART therapy, is used to treat anxiety, phobia, PTSD, substance abuse and more in a clinical setting. It is a type of trauma resolution therapy that has been shown to reduce intense physical and emotional reactions to painful memories and achieve therapeutic benefits in as few as 1-5 sessions [1]. That’s why it’s called “accelerated therapy.”

Clients undergoing ART therapy may experience dramatic breakthroughs and resolve psychological distress faster than those who solely experience traditional “talk therapy.”

In addition to treating substance use disorders, some of the mental health disorders and challenges that can be addressed through ART include:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Eating disorders
  • Grief
  • Low self-esteem
  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
  • Panic Attacks
  • Performance Anxiety
  • Phobias
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
  • Stress [1]

Used by mental health practitioners all over the world, ART draws on therapeutic frameworks such as Gestalt therapy, inner child work, exposure therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and guided imagery. It can be combined with other therapeutic modalities depending on the client’s specific needs and situation.

What To Expect in ART Therapy
Sessions

Similar to EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing), ART utilizes rapid eye movements to simulate the brain’s REM sleep cycle. Combining these eye movements with a technique called Voluntary Memory/Image Replacement helps keep the client in a relaxed frame of mind and changes the way their brain stores painful or traumatic memories. [1]

During an ART session, a certified therapist or licensed clinical social worker will ask the client to recall formative painful or distressing memories. As the client taps into a memory, the therapist will guide the client’s eye movements to mimic the REM cycle.

The rapid eye movement prevents the clients from losing control or getting “stuck” in a trigger response to a past event. After one or more sessions, the client can think about these distressing memories without activating a nervous system response such as anxiety, a panic attack, or disassociation.

How is ART Different Than EMDR?

(EMDR) therapy sessions are becoming more popular as a treatment for PTSD and trauma-related mental health disorders. ART and EDMR have some similarities, but there are also some key differences.

Unlike EMDR, ART focuses on the physical and emotional sensations related to a distressing memory and does not require a detailed recollection of the experience. It also prioritizes relieving the client of any physical or emotional distress and reframing their painful memories in a positive or productive way.

Both EMDR and ART are led by trained and certified practitioners. They create a safe and supportive environment for clients to explore their past so they can better cope with the present and build a healthy future.

EMDR and ART are not just great therapeutic techniques for dealing with stress and anxiety, but they can also help those looking for PTSD treatment in Austin. These techniques, especially ART, have been proven to be very effective in handling trauma. We can help reprogram those distressing and traumatic memories to help you live a more balanced and fulfilled life.

Accelerated resolution therapy is accessible to a broad range of people, from adolescents to adults. All that is required of a client undergoing ART is that they are willing to examine their past behavior and experiences and are able to move their eyes back and forth in a smooth pattern while holding onto a thought.

How ART Can Contribute to Addiction Recovery

Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) is used to treat a number of mental health conditions and has been shown to be particularly valuable in addressing substance use disorders and any co-occurring anxiety disorders.

Addiction often forms as a coping mechanism to attempt to reduce the impact of a traumatic experience or mental health disorders such as depression and anxiety. Unfortunately, substance abuse does not solve the root cause of these issues and may even make them worse.

By participating in ART and other types of trauma therapy, individuals struggling with addiction can reduce the psychological and emotional weight of past traumas and can better navigate the current stressors in their lives. Clients who undergo ART often experience better self-esteem, lower levels of depression, and are more capable of experiencing positive feelings. [2]

The therapists and counselors at Infinite Recovery have found accelerated resolution therapy leads to powerful healing. It can help clients struggling with addiction make peace with their past and the underlying causes of substance abuse.
