Infinite Recovery offers spirituality therapy as part of our holistic approach to addiction recovery. While our treatment center is not affiliated with a specific religion, we draw heavily on the 12 Steps to Recovery philosophy, which emphasizes the importance of connecting with a higher power and having a spiritual awakening as part of the recovery journey.
Our spirituality offerings include practices such as drum circles, meditations, and sound baths. We encourage clients to connect with their spiritual or religious beliefs while undergoing addiction treatment so that they feel supported, hopeful and empowered to change their lives.
Our spiritual therapy curriculum is different from week to week but typically includes some aspect of meditation, self-inquiry, and self-acceptance. Spiritual wellness is an integral part of all we do, as a person’s spiritual health is one of our 8 Dimensions of Wellness.
Some of the modalities we work with include:
An affirmation circle is a facilitated group activity where participants share positive thoughts and reflections about each other and themselves. Affirmation circles can be useful for creating a sense of community, improving self esteem, and boosting mood. It causes individuals to focus on the positive aspects of their lives, their higher power, and the things they are grateful for.
Drum circles are an ancient practice that allow individuals to express themselves and connect with others through rhythm and music. A person does not need to know how to play the drums or any instrument in order to participate in a drum circle. The rhythms are easy to learn and are led by an experienced drum circle facilitator. Many individuals find the practice of group drumming to be cathartic and healing. [4]
Research continues to show the benefits of mindfulness-based interventions for substance use disorders, relapse prevention, and psychiatric disorders. [4] The practice of mindfulness involves focusing attention on the present moment and accepting reality as it is without judging or needing to “fix” anything. Mindfulness practices include meditation, yoga, and tai chi, and have many benefits that include lowered stress, increased focus, less emotional reactivity, better cognitive function, and better relationships. [5]
Sound baths are a calming and grounding practice that involve the use of singing bowls, gongs, or other instruments to create calming sounds for participants, who typically enjoy the experience with their eyes closed or lying down. The result is often a serene, meditative state that allows a person to connect with their own spiritual beliefs, concept of god, or something greater than themselves.
Infinite Recovery seeks to promote and support the spiritual health of all of our clients, no matter what a person’s beliefs or religious backgrounds. We are an inclusive and accepting facility that respects all beliefs, and are not affiliated with a specific religious organization. Our staff create a safe and welcoming environment to help individuals explore life’s big questions, process their emotions, improve their awareness, and feed their soul.
Religious or spiritual education and therapy have been shown to have a positive impact on clients’ quality of life and spiritual health, making it an accessible and effective treatment for substance use disorders. [1]
Many recovery approaches, such as the 12 Steps and Alcoholics Anonymous, emphasize prayer, meditation, and a connection to something greater. [2] Involvement in groups like AA have been positively correlated with sobriety and abstinence following addiction treatment. [2] In addition, research suggests that individuals in recovery with high levels of spirituality and faith have lower levels of anxiety, higher resilience to stress, and a more optimistic outlook. [3]
Religious or spiritual beliefs are foundational to many individuals’ view of reality. Whether a person believes in a personal god or particular religion (or in a more general higher power), this belief system can sustain them through difficult times and provide a foundational code of ethics and healthy living.
We respect the spiritual beliefs of each of our clients, and intentionally create opportunities for individuals to connect to their higher power or practice their religion.
Spiritual practices are common in many addiction treatment settings, especially those based on the 12 Steps of Recovery. Whether or not a person has pre-existing spiritual beliefs or religious beliefs upon entering treatment, the recovery journey causes individuals to face spiritual and existential topics such as mortality, love, human nature, ethics, vulnerability, acceptance, and resilience. Research suggests that individuals who connect with a higher power during addiction or mental health treatment have favorable outcomes. [2]
In addition, being part of a spiritual community can be beneficial to the recovery process. The opposite of addiction is connection, and participating in a spiritual or religious group can create a sense of support, hope and belonging.
Addiction is a complex disease that affects the spirit, mind and body. At Infinite Recovery, we believe in helping individuals heal holistically on every level, addressing the underlying causes of their addictive behavior instead of just the symptoms. Our clinicians and therapists are trained to identify the ways that trauma, past experiences, family history, spiritual health, and mental health can all factor into an individual’s dependency on drugs or alcohol.
Our holistic approach is based on the 8 Dimensions of Wellness, which is the framework we use to develop programming that addresses every level of a person’s life. The 8 Dimensions of Wellness are:
By focusing on emotional wellness and spiritual health as essential components of the recovery process, we support clients in developing a fulfilling life of meaning, purpose and joy.
In addition to spiritual therapy, we offer a number of services designed to promote physical and mental health. Our goal with each therapeutic modality is to create a safe and accepting place for clients to explore themselves and seek to create a life of meaning and fulfillment.
Individual and Group Therapy
We provide individual and group talk therapy sessions for individuals in our addiction treatment programs. We work with experienced mental health professionals who are highly trained in treating clients with substance use disorder and support them in healing and moving forward. We also connect clients and their families with ongoing counseling services and mental health resources. For those who prefer pastoral counselors or faith based psychology, we can connect them with the right person.
Fitness Therapy
Physical health and fitness are an important part of our recovery program, connecting mind and body for holistic wellness. Our facility includes an on-site gym, a swimming pool, and a boxing ring where clients can improve their strength and endurance, release stress and emotions, establish a routine, and boost their mental and physical health.
Art Therapy
Our art therapy group sessions are led by mental health professionals and include activities such as collage and vision board making, painting, and drawing. These creative outlets can be helpful for individuals in early recovery, especially for those who may have a difficult time expressing themselves verbally. Art-making has many mental and emotional benefits, supporting the connection between mind and body, and supplementing more traditional therapeutic approaches.
Relapse Prevention Therapy
During treatment, each client works with their clinical team to create a relapse prevention strategy so that they can recognize the early stages of relapse and develop strategies for self care and stress management.
